We are committed to providing a safe working environment for our employees and therefore believe it is important to record near misses, minor and reportable accidents, based on a uniform reporting standard, at all facilities along with total hours worked which together provides an aggregate annualised minor/reportable accident rate per 100 employees.
Worldwide employee headcount for our operations decreased from 12,577 at the end of 2010, to 9,912 at the end of 2011. The average number of Laird employees in 2011 was 10,957 (2010, 12,605).
We record Greenhouse gas emissions (tonnes/£1 million of revenue), energy consumption (KwH/£1 million of revenue) and waste to landfill sites (tonnes/£1 million of revenue).
Our environmental strategy targets reductions in energy usage, greenhouse gas emissions and waste sent to landfill, sharing successful ideas and best practice wherever appropriate across all plants globally. Environmental indicators for 2011 reflect continued market driven reduction in operations with a low energy and carbon profile (such as handset assembly) but strong demand-driven growth in higher impact operations.
Set against this context, Laird’s CO2 emissions per £1m of sales increased by 2% to 77 tonnes, while power consumption increased 4% to 197,043 KwH per £1m of sales. Reductions were achieved in 2011 for waste to landfill relative to sales, which decreased 7% to 1.17 tonnes total waste to landfill per £1m of sales. In 2011, as part of our environmental strategy, we set a greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of 5% in total metric tonnes CO2 relative to total hours worked for our 9 largest sites. Although we did not meet this target, total CO2 emissions in 2011 were approximately 3% below 2010 levels. The reduction target of 5% in total metric tonnes CO2 relative to total hours worked will be applied across our smaller sites in 2012.
